European Rugby Champions Cup 2018-2019 Round 3 Predictions

It feels like an age since we had European Club action. As is the nature of the European season we are going to squeeze two rounds of European action in-between the November Internationals and the festive period.

Here is my video with my European Rugby Champions Cup Round 3 Predictions:

Edinburgh v Newcastle Falcons – Newcastle Falcons by 3

Falcons might sit bottom of the Premiership Table but they have only lost 1 game in their last 8 in all competitions! That includes wins against Montpellier and Toulon. In contrast Edinburgh have lost to Dragons and Zebre in their last 4 games. Still Edinburgh have won every home game this season. I think that run could come to an end this weekend and so I’m backing Falcons better overall form for a narrow win.

Scarlets v Ulster – Scarlets by 5

These sides met just 2 weeks ago in Wales where Scarlets won 29-12. Sure Scarlets have not been as consistent as recent years but still they are the better of these two sides. Whilst I say that Ulster are on the same number of points (29) as Scarlets in the Pro 14. Also Ulster beat an injury plagued Scarlets 15-13 on the opening weekend of the season. Still I think we’ll be seeing a similar result to a fortnight ago.

Lyon v Glasgow Warriors – Glasgow Warriors by 5

Put simply I don’t think that Lyon care about this tournament. They lost their opening two games and I think their focus is on the Top 14 where they sit 4th. So purely on that I think this will be a rare away win in France for Glasgow.

Exeter Chiefs v Gloucester Rugby – Exeter Chiefs by 10

This is an all Premiership clash and again these two sides met 2 weeks ago. That was also at Sandy Park and the result that day was 23-6. Exeter will be looking to bounce back from their first loss of the season in the Premiership and also will be bringing back their international players. I can see Gloucester keeping it closer that 17 points but I can’t see them winning.

Bath v Leinster – Leinster by 10

Bath are not in the best of form having won only 1 game in the last 10 across all competitions. Coming up against the champions of Europe and arguably the best club side in the world is not what they needed right now. This looks like a comfortable away win for Leinster.

Toulon v Montpellier – Montpellier by 5

An all Top 14 clash and normally this would mean go with the home side. However Toulon have been an absolute mess this season flirting with the relegation battle. So I’m going to back Montpeillier to get the away win even if they are only 1 place above Toulon in the Top 14.

Wasps v Toulouse – Wasps by 3

This clash between Wasps and Toulouse I found really difficult to call. Toulouse are having a really good season sat 2nd in the Top 14 and having won their opening two games in this competition. However those were only won by 2 and 1 point. Wasps have been having a tough time of it recently but are still in that second group in the Premiership and they do have quality platers. So I’m looking at a narrow home victory.

Saracens v Cardiff Blues – Saracens by 10

Saracens haven’t lost a game all season in any competition (by that I mean European Rugby Champions Cup, Premiership and Premiership Cup). So simply put Cardiff will find themselves out of their depth in this one.

Munster v Castres – Munster by 10

Munster haven’t lost a home all season and Castres last away outing overseas was a loss to Gloucester. The Irish team will win this one comfortably.

Racing 92 v Leicester Tigers – Racing 92 by 15

Racing have had their issues with consistency this season. However people are worried about Leicester who’s last win was on the 20th of October at home to Scarlets. They have only won once away from home and that was against Northampton who aren’t too far away. This should be a big home win.
