MLR 2019 Round 2 Predictions

Week 1 of MLR was fantastic with all the games within a single score at the end. Craig has written a good roundup of all the action over at The Runner Sports and you can watch my post match reactions at the bottom of this post.

Round 2 has a lot to live up to after those close games. When it comes to picking though there is a fly in the ointment. The Americas Rugby Championship (ARC) kicks off this weekend and so some players will be away on international duty. We’re just going to have to wait and see how that impacts the different sides.

Here is my video with my MLR 2019 Round 2 Predictions:

Austin Elite v Utah Warriors – Austin Elite by 3

In a wet game Elite lost a narrow one to SaberCats last weekend. I don’t know how much we will learn from that game going forwards if it’s dry. There was lots of traditional wet weather kicking but I can’t see that happening if it’s dry.

I talked about Elite’s mass changes int he offseason last week but I’m more concerned with Warriors losses. They have only lost 3 players but they are key players. Kurt Morath and Paul Lasike ran things from 10/12 and David Tameilau is a major loss in the loose forwards. Because of those key losses I’m backing Elite to open their account this weekend.

New Orleans Gold v Glendale Raptors – Glendale Raptors by 7

NOLA surprised a lot of people by seeing off a fancied Arrows last weekend. That had a lot to do with the Arrows disjointed defence allowing space out wide. That’s one thing you are not going to see from the Raptors this weekend. The Raptors are the best drilled team in this league and they might lack a bit of magic at times to break down other organised teams but that won’t be a concern this weekend. My only concern is the loss of players to the USA national side for the ARC.

San Diego Legion v Seattle Seawolves – Seattle Seawolves by 10

Last weekend saw some puzzling game management from Legion. Boyer box kicked long down the left several times and that just led to RUNY counter attacking down the opposite wing. This led to a try and Legion’s kick chase really wasn’t up to it. This weekend they host a team that loves to defend and then counter attack. Yup this looks like a receipt for disaster if Legion keep to the same game plan. Seattle to win this one comfortably

Rob and I will be bringing you post match reaction to Legion v Seawolves straight after the final whistle. We’ll also wrap-up the action from the earlier 2 games.
