What an opening round of games for the 6 Nations! We had Wales with the biggest come back when France were….well France. Scotland putting Italy away comfortably before switching off in the final part against Italy. Then England getting their tactics just right against Ireland. We should not forget though that there is also the Women’s Six Nations and The Americas Rugby Championship taking place. I’ll give you my predictions for all 3 tournaments.
Here is my video with my 6 Naitions 2019 Round 2 Predictions:
6 Nations (Men’s)
Scotland v Ireland – Ireland by 7
Both these sides suffered key injuries in the opening weekend. Scotland got one of those wins with things for the coaches to work on. That means there’s no complacency from them. However they have the worst of situations. A really good team on the rebound after a performance and results they’ll be very unhappy with. Also with memories of 2 years ago in Scotland I think Ireland will be coming with attitude and be too much to handle.
Italy v Wales – Wales by 20
Italy have shown improvements at club level but that hasn’t filtered through to the national team yet. Ben Darwin is one that thinks we will be seeing that sooner rather than later.
I think though that it’s not going to be as soon as this weekend. Whilst there were questions about the Welsh performance against France, they did get the result. This is the perfect game for them to polish the performance side of things a head of harder challenges to come. Anything short of a TBP win would be a failure for Wales at this point.
England v France – England by 7
People have been going to town with England’s performance and it was good. We still need to see it in back to back games mind you and there was an element of fortune about some of the scores. However what I think we saw was much closer to what England can do when they have everyone fit. Well not everyone but it’s the most complete squad Eddie has had for a long time. France well what can we say? Great first half that totally collapsed in the second. If they put together 2 halves of rugby like the first half they will trouble England, well any side in the world. But can anyone see them doing that?
6 Nations (Women’s)
Scotland Women v Ireland Women – Ireland Women by 10
Scotland came up well short against Italy. In previous years I’ve said that the Womens 6 Nations is a top 2 of England and France, then Ireland followed by a bottom 3 of the rest. That means it’s a worrying start for Scotland and I expect a comfortable win by Ireland.
Italy Women v Wales Women – Italy Women by 5
Well done Italy! With that confidence boosting win and home advantage they could be on for a good tournament. Wales had an expected hard day at the office against France and then had to return to the office to work. No trips to the south of France to prepare against Italy as the men are doing. So you have to back the home side to win here.
England Women v France Women – England Women by 3
This game should be a cracker! England have looked good over November and now into this tournament with an away win in Ireland. France equally beat the Black Ferns in November and have started with a comprehensive victory over Wales. I’m going with a narrow home win but this could go either way and will be one of the games of the weekend across all competitions.
Americas Rugby Championship (ARC)
Uruguay v Chile – Uruguay by 30
Uruguay backed up their good World Cup qualification with another win over Canada. This should be a very comfortable win at home. Chile and Brazil just don’t have the resources that they other sides in this competition get from World Rugby or the player base.
Argentina XV v USA – USA by 3
This is the tie of the round. Over the last 2 years this fixture has always ended in a draw. I think it’s going to be close again but I’m backing the away side as I think they have progressed more in the last 12 months.
Brazil v Canada – Canada by 20
As I said above Brazil don’t have the resources to compete at this level yet but they need this competition to grow. Expect an away TBP win here too.
