Super Rugby 2019 Round 5 Predictions

A bit of normality returned last weekend. Except those of us that went for the Sunwolves upset you should have done well with your picks. This weekend we have “only” 6 games as the Blues, Bulls and Sharks have the weekend off. There are still plenty of games that aren’t easy to pick though.

Catchup with what happened in Round 4 with the DrivingMaul Round 4 Review.

Here is my video with my Super Rugby 2019 Round 5 Predictions:

Before we get into the actual predictions, I have started a new series “DrivingMaul v The Bookie”. Check out how much I beat the TAB by last weekend.

Chiefs v Hurricanes – Hurricanes by 7

With the Blues getting their first win of the season last weekend, the Chiefs are the only remaining New Zealand side to pick up a victory. There are people now asking where is that first win going to come from? After this weekend they go on tour playing the Bulls and Jaguares away before coming home to host the Blues.

The Hurricanes have negotiated the early part of the season well as players have slowly returned. They have 1 loss but that was away to the Crusaders and that’s going to happen to most if not all teams. With the Chiefs wows you have to say that the Canes will go into this as rare away favourites.

I will be Live on YouTube straight after the final whistle with post match reaction.

Brumbies v Waratahs – Brumbies by 5

I found this to be the hardest game of the weekend to call. The Brumbies have only picked up 1 victory all season. That was at home to the Chiefs and that’s turning out to be not such a great achievement. However the Tahs haven’t looked convincing in all their games blowing a bit hot and cold.

The strong Brumbies pack could really cause the Tahs some issues, the big question is can the Brumbies contain those dangerous Tats backs? I’m backing that the Brumbies can disrupt the ball enough to give them the edge.

DHL Stormers v Jaguares – DHL Stormers by 7

The Stormers have really turned things around since that big opening loss to the Bulls. That or the Bulls really are that good, which is a possibility. Back to back wins over the Lions and Sharks will really have bread some confidence.

With the Jaguares we are seeing that they are still very dangerous at home but travelling is a problem for them. The 47-39 score line last weekend was flattering to them as they scored 4 unanswered tries to get somewhere close but never threatening the win. I think the new found confidence from the Stormers will see them home.

Sunwolves v Reds – Reds by 3

OK I’m not going to make the same mistake twice. I backed the Sunwolves last weekend off the back of their Chiefs performance. They are much improved this season but are still going to get the odd upset win rather than string them back to back.

The Reds are the only team other than the Chiefs, to have not picked up a win yet. They have had a tough schedule though, Highlanders away, Crusaders at home and then Waratahs away. This should be the weekend that they turn a decent performance into a victory.

Highlanders v Crusaders – Crusaders by 3

Battle of the South Island here we come! The Highlanders are looking at lot like their 2015 vintage in that they are reliant on their All Blacks. When they do have them though they could beat anyone and could go all the way to the title.

At the moment though it’s really had not to back the Crusaders. They have won all 4 of their games so far to top the ladder. They demolished the Chiefs at the weekend whilst missing Franks, Todd, Strange (top line out man in the competition), Drummond, Bridge, Whitelock and Read. Yup that’s half a team rested. I know we threw the rulebook out the window last weekend, well the new rulebook says always back the Crusaders.

I will be Live on YouTube straight after the final whistle with post match reaction.

Emirates Lions v Rebels – Emirates Lions by 5

The Lions certainly put on a display against the Jaguares last weekend! A lot of people are still to be convinced by them and they aren’t the same side as the last few years. That doesn’t mean that they are a bad side though, just one that won’t make the final.

The Rebels come into this game with 3 victories to their name but strongly enough that include the Brumbies twice. Beating the Highlanders might look good but you have to remember the players that the Landers rested. Don’t get me wrong the Rebels are a decent side but they still have to prove themselves against a playoff team with all their players. This weekend will tell us a lot but I think the travel and altitude will prove their downfall.
