Super Rugby 2019 Round 9 Predictions

I thought that last week was fairly predictable and it was apart from the Africa Conference games…. Oh well hopefully 1 week I’ll get all the pics right, will it be this week?

Catchup with what happened in Round 8 with the DrivingMaul Round 8 Review hosted by Steve from the Cornflake YouTube Channel.

Here is my video with my Super Rugby 2019 Round 9 Predictions:

Before we get into the actual predictions, I have started a new series “DrivingMaul v The Bookie”. Check out how much I beat the TAB last weekend.

Crusaders v Highlanders – Crusaders by 10

If you are in Hamilton this coming Friday come down to The Zone Sports Bar and join me watching the game. The Crusaders have been marching on and they are on a record home winning record. Last weekend the comfortably put away the Brumbies and it’s hard to see who can beat them.

The Highlanders with Aaron Smith and Naholo missing have been struggling. Add into that the loss of Banks and you have a real injury crisis. Even Ben “Superman” Smith is finding it hard to carry the side as we have seen with 4 losses on the bounce. Well officially it’s 2 then a draw then 2 more but that draw was the cancelled game. It unfortunately looks like a comfortable home win.

I will be Live on YouTube straight after the final whistle with post match reaction.

Rebels v DHL Stormers – Rebels by 10

This is a horror tour for the Stormers. So far they are 3 losses from 3 games and they are going to face a side that hasn’t lost in Australia this season. Yup the Rebels are topping the Australian conference with the old duo of Genia and Cooper pulling the strings.

The one thing that gives you hope is that the Stormers have shown that they can play in a couple of different styles. That means they are hard to prepare against. However they have come unstuck against weaker opposition than they will face this weekend. Means we are looking at a second home win this weekend.

Chiefs v Blues – Chiefs by 3

The New Zealand Saturday evening game see 2 of the form teams in the competition go head to head. That’s not something I thought I’d be saying a few weeks ago. However the Chiefs have turned things around by moving DMac to 15. A draw and 2 wins means that the camp must be a much happier place now.

The Blues are on an unbelievable 4 game winning streak! Playing the Crusaders followed by going on tour meant for a really tough opening 3 games but since then it’s been perfect. The only question mark that still hangs over them is travelling. Those 4 wins were all in Auckland (even if they were at 2 different stadiums) and that means we still haven’t seen them perform away from home. Sure this is one of the shortest away trips in the competition but still it’s away from home. We are now up to 3 home predictions.

I will be Live on YouTube straight after the final whistle with post match reaction.

Brumbies v Emirates Lions – Brumbies by 5

This was going to be one of the tougher games to call until we saw last weekends capitulation by the Lions. That’s the second time in a couple of weeks that they have given up big first half leads. Unlike against the Rebels though they couldn’t pull this one back.

For all the disappointment around the Brumbies they have a decent home record. Sure they lost to the Rebels in the opening round but they have beaten the Chiefs and Waratahs at home. Away from home they have been a shambles but this isn’t the Lions side of a few years ago. Can they still tour? Well they did get that win over in Argentina but things have gone south since then. I’m backing a fourth home win. Spotting a trend yet?

Cell C Sharks v Jaguares – Cell C Sharks by 3

The Sharks put in a dominating performance last weekend. It looks like the wheels had come off a couple of weeks back. Robert du Preez signed for Sale Sharks next season, there was talk of Bosch leaving as well. The hierarchy mentioned they weren’t happy with the moves and team unity looked like it could be disappearing. Things though have turned around with 2 wins out of their last 3 games.

The Jaguares showed they can win on the road with a good win over the Bulls. However the Bulls did rest a few players and I can’t see the Sharks doing that now. It might have been their initial plan but there are important conference points on the line. That removal of complacency should see the home side to the win.

Vodacom Bulls v Reds – Vodacom Bulls by 3

The final game of the round is a tough one to pick at first. That loss by the Bulls to the Jaguares really is a blow to their confidence. However it might be put down to those rested players and everything will be back to normal this week. We can only wait and see on that.

The Reds really looked to have got things in order with wins over the Sunwolves and Brumbies. Since then they have also put the Stormers away. However the loss to the Rebels might be the game we should take note of. Half that team had just come back from South Africa and still had too much for the Reds. I think the Bulls will get back on the winner podium and be the 6th home side to taste victory this weekend.
