SuperSport Rugby Challenge 2019 Round 5 Predictions

A big thank you again to Andre our SuperSport Rugby Challenge expert.

We narrowly missed the Grand Slam Point when the Falcons pipped the Leopards in a 102 point thriller. Some great matches were played with few surprises. A couple of interesting fixtures this week with the Pumas taking on Griquas and the Blue Bulls taking on the Lions.

Western Province v Eastern Province

Western Province have comfortably dispatched every team before them this season and although the Elephants will be upbeat after their big win over the hapless Border team last week, one just can’t see an upset in this game. This Province team although untested this season seem to be scoring tries for fun! Province will hardly have to use their 2nd gear in this game.

Andre’s Prediction: Western Province by 29

SWD Eagles v Boland Cavaliers

SWD is another team struggling to find any form and will be up against an impressive and transformed Boland team. The Eagles won’t be causing the Boland team any sleepless nights and anything less than a comfortable Boland victory will be a surprise to many. Barring terrible weather, this shouldn’t a close context with the Boland boys full of confidence after coming so close to upsetting the Sharks XV away last week.

Andre’s Prediction: Boland Cavaliers by 27

Blue Bulls v Lions

Both teams are coming off losses and won’t be pleased with last week’s results. They conceded heavily against Griquas and Pumas respectively and I’m sure both teams will revisit their defensive structures this week. It’s a tough match to call and my heart says Lions, but my brain says Bulls. Past results are shared evenly, so enjoy picking a winner in this one. My heart won this time around on my pick!

Andre’s Prediction: Lions by 6
DrivingMaul Prediction: Blue Bulls by 5

Pumas v Griquas

In the game of the round, this is going to be a cracker! Both teams are unbeaten and although the Griquas have clocked up some big scores, I still can’t see a victory over the impressive Pumas at home. Both teams cruised past the Bulls and the Lions last week, but it’s going to take a monumental effort and a solid game plan to beat this Pumas team.

Zimbabwe v Cheetahs

One way traffic in this game and it’s a matter of by how many. Zimbabwe had a credible loss to WP last week, but the Cheetahs should have way too much firepower for the young Zimbabwe team. This should be an entertaining game of running rugby and it should be raining tries this weekend.

Andre’s Prediction: Cheetahs by 34
DrivingMaul Prediction: Cheetahs by 40

Falcons v Griffons

This is another game that should have mixed predictions as both teams have put in a few very good performances of late. The Falcons are definitely on the up-curve and the Griffons have had a very decent season thus far, only narrowly losing to the Blue Bulls and Griquas. I think the home side will definitely fancy their chances to notch up another victory this week.

Andre’s Prediction: Falcons by 11
DrivingMaul Prediction: Griffons by 5

Sharks v Border

In this game the score might get ugly, depending on the team the Sharks decide to put out there. Border are rebuilding their union and this could take time. Sharks to win comfortably even if they start squad members.

Andre’s Prediction: Sharks by 44
DrivingMaul Prediction: Sharks by 7

Namibia Welwitschias v Leopards

The Welwitschias have been inconsistent this season although they have had a tough draw. Their winless start to the season will be put to the test again this weekend by the very attacking Leopards side. The Leopards haven’t come close to resolving their defensive issues out in their opening four rounds. The boys from the Namib, will surely be a little less daunting opposition and I can see the Leopards recording their first win of the season. As stated last week, they don’t have a problem scoring – averaging just short of 40 points per game, it’s the conceding over 40 points a game that’s their problem.

Andre’s Prediction: Leopards by 18
DrivingMaul Prediction: Leopards by 3

Season Record:

Andre: 28 from 32
DrivingMaul: 27 from 32

Andre was a pick behind last week but he’s leapfrogged me! With 2 picks different this week I could jump back into the lead…
