Super Rugby 2019 Round 17 Predictions

Wow how did the Chiefs come back to win that game??? We are being treated to a very close tournament this season that’s so unpredictable. Not only will I try predicting the results for this weekend’s game but I have also tried to figure out who’ll make the finals at the end of this piece.

Catchup with what happened in Round 16 with the DrivingMaul Round 16 Review.

Here is my video with my Super Rugby 2019 Round 17 Predictions:

Highlanders v Vodacom Bulls – Highlanders by 10

The Highlanders will know that they need 2 TBP wins to stand a chance of making the finals. They would normally go into this game licking their lips. The Bulls historically don’t travel well and the Landers should be better rested. However they have had to travel back from South Africa where as the Bulls only down from Auckland.

I think that the desperation off the Highlanders will see some great running rugby. There’ll be no rain issues in Dunedin with the roof down there so conditions will shut this style of play.

The Bulls have really impressed on this tour but I’m backing this to be a game too far for them.

Reds v Blues – Blues by 3

The battle of the colours and 2 of the more boring names in rugby. Whilst the Blues aren’t out of it mathematically, neither of these sides will be making the finals. Can the Blues finally get an away win? After the sort of rugby we’ve seen from the Reds you’d have to think so.

Crusaders v Rebels – Crusaders by 15

Things just don’t get any easier for the Rebels! After looking good to top the Australia Conference they are really scrapping to even make the playoffs. They aren’t going to be adding to their 2 wins in their last 7 games this weekend.

The Crusaders are going to be looking to make a statement after giving up a 0-20 lead over the Chiefs to lose last weekend. Look for the intensity to lifted and for it to be raining tries in Christchurch.

Waratahs v Brumbies – Brumbies by 3

OK it’s at this point that I was questioning my sanity with my picks this weekend. The Brumbies have only 2 wins on the road this season. Those have been against the Stormers (bottom of the Africa conference) and the Sunwolves (bottom of the whole competition).

The Tahs are also coming off the back of a moral boosting win over the Rebels. However the Brumbies have hit form at the right time. 6 wins in their last 7 games shows that they are on the match to top the Australia conference.

Emirates Lions v Hurricanes – Hurricanes by 3

Why were we all down on the Canes last weekend? They have only lost 3 games all season. That’s 2 against the Crusaders (best team in the tournament) and the Jaguares who have only lost once in their last 8 games. This Canes side is a side that knows how to end up on the right side of the ledger.

The Lions dominated the Stormers last weekend and yet I think the Stormers are more likely to reach the finals. Yup it’s a really weird season this year. The Lions have the players to win this but they are so inconsistent. I have gone for a narrow margin as I’m not confident at all.

DHL Stormers v Sunwolves – DHL Stormers by 15

Phew a game that I can be confident about. The Sunwolves have fallen off a cliff since they heard that they were being cut. An easy win for the Stormers this weekend to put them on the path for an early exit from the finals.

Jaguares v Cell C Sharks – Jaguares by 7

Depending on how results go this weekend the Jaguares might be playing to secure the conference title! That would mean a first ever home playoff for the Jaguares (and also no home playoff in South Africa). As mentioned above the Jaguares are on a sensational run of form at the moment.

We can not say the same for the Sharks. They go from losing to the Reds to drawing with the Crusaders. A very talented side that just can’t put it onto the park consistently. Big question marks over coaching and selection at the Durban based side. Can Robert du Preez Snr survive another season???

I will be Live on YouTube straight after the final whistle with post match reaction.

How’s It Going To Finish?

Here’s my guesstimate as to how it’s going to finish. The Bright green means a home quarter final, dull green an away quarter final and red means not in the playoffs.

If I have this right it will be a miracle the way the season has been going! Where do you think I’ve got it wrong?
