This tournament is super competitive! It’s amazing to think that New Zealand (6 times winners), England (3 times winners in the last 6 years) and Ireland (6 Nations Champions) are all not in the top 4. Argentina or Australia will have the chance to be champions for the first time after coming 6th and 5th respectively last year.
Here is my video with my World Rugby U20s Championship Semi Final Predictions:
New Zealand U20 v Wales U20 – New Zealand U20 by 7
It looks like the Baby Blacks were going to make it into the top 4. But with South Africa being the only team to win all 3 games it came down to bonus points. Wales also picked up 2 wins in what has to be the most competitive U20s tournament ever.
I’m going to back the Baby Blacks in this one as Wales have show in this tournament and also the 6 Nations that they can have hot and cold days.
The Baby Blacks will be a big topic on the All Blacks Edition podcast this week.
Scotland U20 v Italy U20 – Italy U20 by 10
I’m expecting a repeat of Italy’s 22-32 away win in the 6 Nations earlier this year. Italy got drawn in the pool of death but still only lost to England by a solitary point. Scotland might have picked up more bonus points but I think they had the easier trip here.
Argentina U20 v Australia U20 – Australia U20 by 7
One of these sides will have the opportunity to win their first ever U20s title in a few days time. I think that Argentina have done well to get this far. Turning things around after losing to Wales in their opening game is impressive. However Australia picked up 2 impressive wins before losing to England. Picking up a red card in the 3 minute was always going to make that game an uphill battle.
Georgia U20 v Fiji U20 – Georgia U20 by 5
For these 2 teams the important thing is not coming 12th as that means relegation. Georgia are the only side in the bottom 4 that’s picked up a win so far. This is Fiji’s first year back and it was always going to be tough getting used to the level of competition again. I think Georgia will make it safe at the first time of asking. Fiji will have to go into last chance saloon.
South Africa U20 v France U20 – South Africa U20 by 7
Last year France won the whole competition on home soil. Going back to back is a tough ask and one I think they will come up short on. South Africa won all 3 of their games in the group stages. The main issue for them is that they couldn’t rest players in the final group game. France and Australia could knowing that they had already made it into the top 4. Will that extra fatigue tell?
Ireland U20 v England U20 – Ireland U20 by 7
Both these sides will be disappointed with how this tournament turned out. Being in the pool of death along with Australia though was always going to make this tough. When they met earlier in this competition Ireland won 42-26 backing up their 6 Nations win 35-27. Can they make it the hat-trick?
