If we thought that the Mitre 10 Cup 2019 had settled down into an established pecking order, then we were wrong. Congratulations to Southland on their first win in ages also to Otago for turning up away from home. With this unpredictability going on, I try to predict round 8!
I’ll be getting to 23 Mitre 10 Cup and 8 Farah Palmer Cup games this season, bringing you live coverage on Twitter as well as Post Match Interviews on YouTube. I could really use your Support in getting round to all these games as I’m not paid by any organisation to do so.
Taranaki v Southland – Taranaki by 3
Taranaki won their opening 3 games but have gone on to lose 4 on the bounce! With Southland picking up a win last weekend I suddenly found this one hard to pick. Will Southland be playing with more confidence or will they have been partying all week?
Even with those factors and the unpredictability that was thrown up last weekend I have to go Taranaki. They are the better equiped side but will their forwards be able to give the backs enough good ball?
Tasman v Auckland – Tasman by 5
Tasman just know how to win. The last 2 rounds they have had to come back to win their games. They still haven’t lost a game this season and at home you have to back them. Auckland have only beaten 1 premiership side this seasons and that was Counties. They are a good side and it’s a matter of when they get it together. It’s hard to see them getting it together this weekend.
Join us on Monday’s at 8pm for the Mitre 10 Cup show as we review the weekend’s action, cover the hot topics and look forward to the next round
Bay of Plenty v Hawke’s Bay – Bay of Plenty by 3
Battle of the Bays and I’ll be at this game. It’s 2nd vas 1st in the Championship as well and could decide who gets a home final if both make it that far. Clearly the best 2 sides in the Championship that could go either way. Maybe I’m making a heart over head pick here.
I will be at Tauranga for this game, follow me on Twitter for my live coverage.
Wellington v Northland – Wellington by 20
Northland are really struggling and have dropped below Southland! Wellington are looking like securing a home semi final and this should be another step towards that.
Canterbury v Counties Manukau – Canterbury by 5
Canterbury lost to Manawatu at home last round! I don’t expect to see that happening this weekend though. Counties are on a horrible run of results having not won since the second round. Last weekend they were the first team to lose to Southland in over 2 years! Two sides in not great form but the home team should take it.
Otago v Waikato – Waikato by 3
Otago shocked us all with their first away win of the season last round! They have been getting up for the Shield defences but not away from home. This is their hardest defence to date and let’s be honest they have held on to it longer than most people expected. Waikato will be hurting from losing the shield to Otago last season and you’d expect win it back this weekend.
Check out my video on where the Ranfurly Shield could go this year.
Manawatu v North Harbour – Manawatu by 3
I found this one hard to pick as well. Manawatu are suddenly on a run of 3 wins! That’s off the back of losing their opening 4 games and suddenly they are in the playoff positions. Harbour are struggling having only got 2 wins themselves and are on a run of 2 losses. Maybe they were complacent last weekend against Otago or are there bigger issues? Manawatu are in with a good shout here.
