The final block of games in the pool stage of the Rugby World Cup is a massive 12 games. For content creators like me we are already flagging with the late nights of watching games but we keep going. I will be bringing you my predictions throughout the tournament and I will be competing with Rugby4Cast and RugbyVision. They are 2 sites that run algorithmic predictions and they are competing with me in my open SuperBru league.
Watch the #RugbyChat show, every Tuesday night at 8pm (NZ time), where we will talk about the hot topics in rugby. Let’s be honest there’s nothing hotter than the Rugby World Cup at the moment.
South Africa v Canada – South Africa by 50
The fall from grace of Canada has happened in the background and barely noticed by the main stream rugby media. They were ranked 11th in the world backing 2011 and now are a lowly 22nd. They lost by 41 points to Italy and to think Canada were being talked about as possible entrants into the 6 Nations.
Anyway enough of looking back and let’s look at this game. The Springboks beat Italy by 46 points and Italy beat Canada by 41 points. Yup big South Africa victory even without a full strength side.
Argentina v USA – Argentina by 10
I might have picked this as one of the possible upsets at the Rugby World Cup, but that was pre-tournament. The USA have disappointed in their performances so far. Also Argentina need to win this game to ensure they finish 3rd in the group. That’s important so that they don’t have to qualify for the the Rugby World Cup in France in 2023.
Scotland v Russia – Scotland by 35
This is a must win game for Scotland and with a TBP if they are to have any chance of making the Quarter Finals. But more than that they need to do it without burning too many matches as they face Japan 4 days later. The squad selection is going to be really interesting as they balance resting players with making sure they get the result.
Let’s be honest, even with that Russia are going to lost their 4th and final game. It’s just a matter of what the margin is.
Wales v Fiji – Wales by 10
So far it’s been a perfect tournament for Wales, now they need to play Fiji and then 4 days later turn out to face Uruguay. Two games that they are expected to win with some comfort. They need to make sure that they don’t look too far ahead and start thinking of the Quarter Finals but they also need to balance their resources with that in mind.
I can’t see Wales slipping up but Fiji did look much better last time out when the beat Georgia by 35 points. Also Fiji will be looking to secure 3rd place and get that automatic qualification for France in 2023. Could be cracking game.
Australia v Georgia – Australia by 20
The Wallabies will know by kickoff what they need to do. If Wales have won then absolutely nothing. However they won’t know that when the squad is selected so I’m expecting a strong side from Australia in this one. They should rack up the TBP.
Georgia will probably have the same motivation as Fiji (assuming Fiji have lost) in trying to get that 3rd place but let’s be honest it’s a real long shot.
New Zealand v Italy – New Zealand by 50
EDIT – This game has been canceled due to severe weather.
As I’ve said before, Italy had their 2 wins then it was going to be 2 big losses. The Springboks beat Italy by 46 points and I expect the All Blacks to do something similar.
England v France – England by 10
EDIT – This game has been canceled due to severe weather.
So far England haven’t put a foot wrong in this tournament but their biggest tests are still coming. France on the other hand have shown us some fantastic play, but haven’t been able to sustain it for a full game. That has led to some nail bitting finishes that so far they have come out on top of. This game though I think that they’ll find if they don’t play the full 80 they’ll lose.
Ireland v Samoa – Ireland by 20
This game is so important, obviously if Samoa get the win then we have a second cat amongst the pigeons result. I can’t see that happening but Ireland really need the TBP as well as the win. That will secure them a quarter final berth. If they don’t get that then they are waiting for the final game of the pool stages to find out what their fate is.
I think we are all expecting Ireland to take a strangle hold and dictate this game. But maybe just maybe they’ll get dragged into a free flowing game…..
Namibia v Canada – Namibia by 5
The 2 lowest ranked sides in the competition go head to head. Namibia who are ranked 23rd have shown us the more in their losses so far. Canada who are ranked 1 place higher in 22nd haven’t shown us much at all and that’s a real shame. So I’m going for the “upset” with the lower ranked team winning.
USA v Tonga – Tonga by 3
I have already said that I have been disappointed with the USA at this tournament. Tonga on the other hand I have seen more than I was expecting to after their warmup games. So far they have faced Tier 1 opposition only meaning this is their real chance. Those moments when they have caused the Tier 1 sides problems should be enough to see them to the win here.
Wales v Uruguay – Wales by 40
Wales are another side that have done everything that they have needed to without maybe showing their full hand. I can’t see any tricks coming out for this game either. Uruguay have shown lots of passion and got a great win over Georgia. This though will be a step too far for them and all their new fans they have gained over the last couple of weeks.
Japan v Scotland – Japan by 5
This game has always been on the must watch list for this Rugby World Cup. For now let’s just assume that Scotland will beat Russia with a TBP. The winner of this game will go through to the quarter finals.
The loser might also be in with a shout but that’s going to depend what Ireland gets out of their game with Samoa. Do any of us think they won’t get the TBP win? Yup this game is going to be a knockout game and Japan have shown they have the ability to win this and I think they will. Have I got caught up with all the hype? Maybe but Japan are ranked above Scotland in World Rugby’s rankings….
