Bay of Plenty v Manawatu – Bay of Plenty by 10
The last time these 2 sides met the score was Bay of Plenty 46 – 10 Manawatu in Tauranga. You can see my post match interviews with both coaches below. In that game The Bay managed to contain Laumape very well in some windy conditions. It’s the only game Manawatu have lost with Laumape playing this season.
The Bay’s biggest concern is the injury to Trask that they suffered in that Manawatu game. He’s been running things well from 10 and his replacement has big boots to fill.
With the free entry we should get a good crowd on Friday night and there’s no Rugby World Cup clash either. Let’s hope that it stays dry.
I will be at Rotorua International Stadium for this game, follow me on Twitter for my live coverage.
Tasman v Auckland – Tasman by 10
The last time these 2 sides met, back in September, Tasman racked up a big 40-0 victory at home. I think that Auckland should be able to keep it closer than that. Breaking down the best defence in the competition is going to be their main concern. Sure allowing 40 points isn’t good but you have to score something if you’re going to win the game.
Hawke’s Bay v Otago – Otago by 3
Maybe this one is heart over head. I was impressed when I talked to HBen Herring after their loss to Northland last weekend though. They really have been targeting this semi-final after they lost the Ranfurly Shield. Also the last time these 2 sides met it finished 29 – 21 to Hawke’s Bay showing that Otago can keep it close away from home.
As you will have heard in that video, Otago are going to have to front up against a very good Hawke’s Bay pack though.
Wellington v Canterbury – Wellington by 5
This should be a cracking game. It finished Wellington 23 – 22 Canterbury earlier this season and that was when Canterbury were in a slump. Canterbury have improved including picking up and defending the Ranfurly Shield. There is a question of how much that will have taken out of them as North Harbour pushed them all the way last weekend.
I just can’t see Canterbury containing that Wellington back line.
Farah Palmer Cup
The Farah Palmer Cup is the women’s provincial competition here in New Zealand. Here are the semi final fixtures:
- Auckland v Wellington
- Canterbury v Counties Manukau
- Otago v Tasman
- Hawke’s Bay v Northland
