Before I get into the predictions here’s a reminder how the 2019 season finished:
Houston SaberCats v Colorado Raptors – Colorado Raptors by 3
The Raptors will be hurting after topping the regular season table in season 1 to not making the playoffs last year. In contrast the SaberCats showed a little improvement but their inability to score tries is really shown in the lack of TBPs. Both sides have new head coaches this year and it will be interesting how they go. The longer culture of success at the Raptors I’m backing to get them the early win.
New Orleans Gold v Old Glory DC – New Orleans Gold by 7
NOLA had a great start to the season last year and then faded. Against an expansion franchise they should again have a good start to the season.
It was interesting listening to the boys on the American Rugby Pod and how they think Old Glory will be the best of the expansion teams. Either way that’s not going to help them too much this weekend.
Rugby ATL v Utah Warriors – Utah Warriors by 5
Again I’m going with the more experienced side. This time with less faith as Utah were the worst team defensively last season and their recruitment doesn’t inspire. For Rugby ATL I think this is very much a learning season.
New England Free Jacks v Rugby United New York – Rugby United New York by 3
The Free Jacks are the final expansion team this season. However they had the most extensive exhibition season. For that reason I think they’ll be the quickest up to speed. However they are facing a side that made it into the playoffs in their first season. RUNY should pick up an early away win.
San Diego Legion v Seattle Seawolves – San Diego Legion by 7
This is the game of the round. A repeat of last season’s final where the Seawolves took the honours. These two sides are the pre-season favourites yet again and this will be a tasty encounter. I’m going with home advantage to be the deciding factor.
Austin Gilgronis v Toronto Arrows – Toronto Arrows by 5
Austin have undergone two name changes in the off season. The setup that Gilgronis are looking to have has the right building blocks in place. Those building blocks take time to deliver change though.
Essentially we are talking a side that lost all it’s games last season, hosting a playoff team. Yup comfortable away win here.
Record So Far
Well it’s Round 1 so there haven’t been any results yet 🙂
